‘Behaved’ Vice Ganda Reluctant to Return Audience Rudeness

I was never really into noontime shows; but recently, I have acquired the habit of watching ABS-CBN’s It’s Showtime. Not the entire show, the latter part of which can be fetid at best. Just the Sine Mo ‘To segment at the start which is filled with hastily thought-up ad libs and can be very hilarious.

Those who watch the show know that the writers cook up a spoof of some current event or even another show and members of the audience are invited to participate. They willingly do, not just because of a moment in the limelight but also for the generous prize money that the director can award them for their efforts.

Last Wednesday’s show was odd to say the least. Most of the time, it is Vice Ganda who makes fun not only of his co-hosts but also of the willing participants from the audience. This time around, the shoe was on the other foot.

Billy Crawford, the tagapagsalaysay, gave this instruction: “Ang hinahanap na clown ay isang boy at isang girl na magaling magpatawa. No bad words!”

“ Was this a PR stunt, therefore, to show the MTRCB that Vice Ganda has become a reformed comedian? Or at least has started to tone down on the black humour? Else, why did all three people that Karyl picked make derogatory jokes aimed at him? ”

So off went Karyl into the audience in search of somebody who could crack a joke that could make the audience laugh.

First, there was this lady by the name of Ava. Here joke went like this: “Si Vice ka ba?”

Karyl: Ha, bakit?

Ava: Kasi kabayo ka talaga eh, kahit sa personal!

Awkward.

Whatever laughter came from the audience was grudging, aware as the people were that the joke was over the top, not to mention shockingly rude. On national television.

Vice’s rejoinder was remarkably tame. In an even voice, he responded, “Gusto ko bumalik ng joke pero behaved na ako ngayon.”

The joke was so rude that one actually willed Vice to get even. Billy Crawford remarked under his breath, “Pigil na pigil o!”

While Jhong Hilario even taunted him with, “Kaya mo ‘yan Vice!” When Vice was still not biting, Jhong goaded him by chanting, “Babalik! Babalik!”

After the obligatory cries of “Hanappp!!!” from the audience, Karyl found this guy named Blair. His joke was even worse.

Blair: Vice, girdle ka ba?

Vice: Bakit?

Blair: Kasi halata eh! May girdle ka!

Vice started to make faces that showed his disdain for the joke; and, indeed, it was every bit as tasteless as the first one. Instead, he just said, “Kayang-kaya ko ibalik ang joke na yan pero... behaved ako!!!”

So, hannnappp!!!

Onto the third member of the audience who gave what was probably the rudest joke of all. The name of the lady was Riza. It went like this.

Riza: Vice, pangit ka ba?

Vice: Pangit? Bakit?

Riza: Hala, di mo alam?

All the joke ever achieved was to hush the audience up in as awkward a moment as the first two. If at all, there were very few who found Riza’s joke funny.

Naturally, neither did Vice, who must have been raring to get even but contented himself with, “Maganda yan kung una kang gumamit! Wag nyo nang gayahin ang style ko ako lang ang kayang gumawa non!’

And because the show was suddenly really going nowhere, who else but Vice would extricate it from the hole that it was in. When one senior citizen was handed the mike, she did not even have to say anything because Vice cried, “Artista na yan!!!”

Awkward moment ended.

Just a thought, however. The criteria for choosing the next audience participant was the ability to tell a joke. At no point did Billy Crawford say that the joke had to be at Vice’s expense.

Was this a PR stunt, therefore, to show the MTRCB that Vice Ganda has become a reformed comedian? Or at least has started to tone down on the black humour? Else, why did all three people that Karyl picked make derogatory jokes aimed at him?

If it was nothing of the sort, then I would have liked Vice to have taken those three down. Just as he was censured for some tasteless jokes delivered during his recent concert, somebody ought to have pointed out that the jokes aimed at Vice were not only NOT funny but also shockingly rude.
