DLSL Alumnus Great Advert for School and City in “It’s Showtime!” Segment

What is it about the noontime show “It’s Showtime” that it is becoming a regular port of call by good looking gentlemen from Lipa? I was not talking about myself, though. Wink.

Albeit, it must be the air. Second wink.

There was this ‘magtatatak’ (shirt printer) named Ajay Cabrera who won last week in the Gandang Lalake segment of the show, in the process giving Vice Ganda an impromptu lesson in how to pronounce a couple of Batangueño words the authentic way.

Monday, and it was the turn of this OFW – whose name escapes me at the moment – nursing graduate of the Lipa City Colleges, to take the Showtime stage. Good looking, yes.

At any rate, the lad was not as good a dancer as last week’s Ajay Cabrera but reasonably better than the OFW nurse. I think, though, that it was his quiet confidence and calm demeanour that earned the judges’ nod rather than his dancing.
Just way too nervous in the question-and-answer portion to have impressed the judges. Part of his reply was self-contradicting. Then again, the nerves.

I normally switch the TV off after the hilarious “Sine Mo ‘To” segment, which is really all I watch Showtime for. But today it was pre-announced before one commercial break that the two Gandang Lalake contestants would be from Cavite and Batangas.

So I stayed as a matter of ethnic duty.

As it happened, the second gentleman was not only from the Province of Batangas but once again from my home city of Lipa.

The 26-year old introduced himself Ross Gilbert Dimaculangan from barangay Tambô, minimum fare from where I live, as a matter of fact.

He is a Marketing Management graduate who currently works as an Accounting Assistant in a local bank. Or maybe he did not say that bit about the bank.

I looked him up on Facebook, but naturally.

From the moment the camera first focused on his face, I immediately knew that I had seen it before. But more on the matter later.

Vice Ganda was a fussy customer as he is every day, and wanted to know what school Ross had gone to. The latter was initially unwilling to say the name of his alma mater, not sure as he was if he was allowed to do so on air.

Silly lad. That OFW nurse the other day had no such qualms and proudly announced his alma mater to the nationwide audience as the Lipa City Colleges.

But Vice and the other hosts assured him that it was perfectly alright, so Ross went on and announced his alma mater. “Animo La Salle Lipa! De La Salle Lipa!”

O ‘di ba free advertising and on national television at that?

But that Ross is from that school finally solved the question of why that face somehow looked familiar. De La Salle Lipa is big enough to make knowing everyone’s name impossible; but small enough to make remembering a face not too much of an ask.

If that makes sense. I am reasonably certain that I knew that face from having seen it while I still worked there.

The hosts wanted to know if Ross’ boss was aware that he had gone to Showtime. Ross replied that the boss was.

Lucky lad. Not all bosses are as open-minded. I say no more.

What was more, Ross was able to say, in response to questions from the show’s hosts, that he has been with his company for five years and that he is aspiring for the position of Branch Accountant.

He said it so pleasantly that nobody from within the branch would have taken offence or felt threatened even if they had a television on and were watching the show at the time. Just a young man with a clear vision of what he wishes to do with his life.

At any rate, the lad was not as good a dancer as last week’s Ajay Cabrera but reasonably better than the OFW nurse. I think, though, that it was his quiet confidence and calm demeanour that earned the judges’ nod rather than his dancing.

The lad was nervous, yes; it cannot be easy to be speaking to the celebrities as he was and on national television at that. But he was in control, that was the good thing.

Quite an excellent advertisement for not only the school but the rest of the city, as a matter of fact. Nadagdagan na naman ang lahî ng gwapings in Lipa.

Wink.
