Batangas Bakeries Given Recognition on World Bread Day; Brillante Mendoza Workshop Successful

Five bakeries and bakeshops were given recognition through a one-day exhibit last October 16 at the Events Centre of SM City Lipa in time for the celebration of World Bread Day.

The participating bakeries were La Esperanza Bakery from Batangas City, Abaksa Bakery from the municipality of Lemery, Nene’s Bakery from the municipality of Taal, Golden Merengue Bakeshop from the town of Lian and Donappetit Cakes from the town of Santo Tomas.

The celebration kicked off with the ceremonial slicing of the kapeng barako cake led by SM Lipa mall manager Liza F. Dimaculangan and DTI Batangas’ Maris Argente. At about four in the afternoon, co-authors Amy Uy and Jenny Orillos of the book “Panaderia: Philippine Bread, Biscuits and Bakery Traditions,” graced the event through a simple book-signing activity.

Each participating bakeshop were also given a copy of the Panaderia book by Anvil Publishing and a certificate of participation from SM City Lipa.

Meanwhile, internationally-acclaimed director Brillante Mendoza, in partnership with SM City Lipa, recently held a film appreciation workshop of the movie “Taklub” last October 15.

The event was attended by 470 students from different schools in the Province of Batangas. These included multi-media arts students from De la Salle Lipa, Art Appreciation students from Batangas State University Malvar Campus, Liberal Arts students from Lipa City Colleges, Education students from Kolehiyo ng Lungsod ng Lipa and Communication Arts students from University of Batangas.

The program started with the screening of the movie Taklub followed by the showing of some behind-the-scenes shots dealing mainly on the following aspects: directing, cinematography, musical scoring and editing.

A day prior the film appreciation workshop, director Mendoza was given a launching program and press conference by SM. Because of his unwavering passion for film and the arts, SM City Lipa gave him a director’s chair made by local artist Marichu Liwag Carstensen.
