A powerful magnitude 5.4 earthquake hit just off the island municipality of Tingloy in Batangas around 8:58 at night on 4 April 2017. The Philippine Institute of Seismology and Volcanology (PHIVOLCS) placed the epicenter of the quake at 7 kilometers west of the island.
Reports over DZMM state that the quake was felt as far as Metro Manila and the Province of Bataan.
Initial reported intensities were 2 for Talisay, Batangas and Pasig City; 3 for Mandaluyong City Quezon City, General Trias and Dasmariñas in Cavite and the district of Sta. Ana in Manila; and 4 for Makati City and Obando in Bulacan.
The first earthquake was followed by a magnitude 4.6 aftershock with epicenter at 7 kilometers east of Tingloy. There were further aftershocks with magnitude 2.5 and 2.6, respectively at 9:17 and 9:26 pm.
A fairly strong aftershock was again felt in Lipa City at 10:10, so the magnitude was probably much stronger in Tingloy.
